If we are quite observant, we have witnessed or seen magnetic locks in business establishments and offices. But sad to say, most of us do not know what they are there for. More so, it is rare for individuals to determine the better magnetic locks from the lousy ones.

It is a sad fact in the sense that we can actually make use of magnetic locks, especially the so-called electric strikes, in our homes to provide us with greater comfort and deeper sense of security. Needless to say, we have to know more about the applications and mechanisms of magnetic locks and strikes before we actually decide to make purchases of them.

Perhaps the most important and vital component of strikes is that they are powered by electromagnetism. As a matter of fact, it is electromagnetism that controls the locking mechanism of such devices. My fifth grade son understands about electromagnetism, so it is a shame if we know about this practical branch of science and technology. From the word itself, electromagnetism taps into electricity and magnetism to power up devices. The reliance on electromagnetism can be sourced from the current in the building or from the battery. So, in this sense, they are as dependable as our home appliances like refrigerator, electric fan and TV.

The most obvious advantage of electric strikes is that we do not need keys anymore to pick locks at home or in the office. We can rely on not being locked out or worrying from losing our important keys anymore. How do strikes exactly work? Well, first, it should be noted that strikes are made from electromagnetic and advanced alloys of metal. Once the electric power is activated, the bolt then inside the strike works itself to unlock or lock the door.

The great thing is that we can have further control with strikes as they do have an incorporated timing mechanism. It is very helpful for businesses as we can be assured that they work only at certain times of the day, preferably during the business hours. Other strikes have a transaction memory mechanism as well that can keep track or record uses or attempted uses of the device. For greater security, the device can even be programmed to set off alarm once an unauthorized person tries to key in incorrect code combinations for more than once. Magnetic locks and strikes normally work only for DC current in 12 to 24 volts.

For emergency incidents, electric strikes can be opened from the inside even without electricity for safe and reliable egress. Only prison facilities are known for much controlled ingress and egress access. Now, we have already known that strikes work using codes that are being read and transformed by electromagnetism.

There are numerous types of coding mechanisms like proximity readers, smart cards and keypads. This proves to be highly convenient for different sorts of uses at homes, offices and other institutions. The important thing is that we should always remember the key combination if we are legit users of the doors. We can now have a safer doors and homes with the strikes.
