In almost all cases, the use of semi automatic airsoft pistols is for recreational and entertainment purposes. It is basically a sport or game. Just like with many other sports, there are clubs and leagues where there is friendly competition with multiple teams of players.

One unique use of these weapons is to reenact war history, especially with recent conflicts that have occurred in the last 70 years. Many people like to combine the history part of wars along with the recreational value of playing in simulated gun battles that don't have lethal ammunition. This is why this sport has become very popular over the years. Except for possible legal restrictions, the popularity is expected to only increase.

Legality

Under federal law, semi automatic airsoft pistols and other airsoft weapons are not firearms. There is no legal requirement with regards to age. However, each state and municipality may supersede federal requirements. There are generally two types of restrictions. One is the restriction on the gun, which is generally on the color or look of the weapon.

There is an increasing number of cities all over the United States that are forbidding the possession or shipment of airsoft weapons. Other cities allow the ownership of airsoft weapons but not the use within city limits. The effect is that many people have to leave the city limits in order to use these replica weapons. These are things that potential buyers need to consider before buying their airsoft weapon.

Safety

With unmodified semi automatic airsoft pistols, the sport is relatively safe when played with the right protection. In particular, it is standard for everyone to wear protective goggles. This way, there will be less chance of an injury to the eye.

When ammunition going at a speed of 300 feet per second, the chances are pretty decent that there may be bruising on the skin. However, it is not enough to penetrate the skin. The weapon would have to fire shots that go much faster than that in order to reach lethal speeds. That is why it is unlikely that anyone will be killed with a standard airsoft gun.

Looks

Many semi automatic airsoft pistols resemble the real thing. The color is black just like with real guns. With real camouflage clothing and realistic looking weapons, many players have the feeling that they are really in a war. That is one of the reasons why many go into this sport. Because of realistic look of airsoft weapons, it is highly ill-advised to go out in public with an airsoft weapon in plain view since many people will mistake it for the real thing. A confrontation with the police might be lethal since the gun will look real to officers.

Because of these concerns, more and more communities and states are considering a legal requirement to have the weapons painted orange or some other color. Today, the tips of the barrel have to be orange color in many states and cities when sold. The rules vary as far as whether the orange tip needs to be kept after the sale.
