While getting my paper the other day, I had an interesting conversation with my neighbor. Bill, who has worked for the same company for over a decade and in that particular industry for twenty something years, told me that while he was not ready to retire, he was sick and tired of the demands of his job and was interested in looking into making his own business online.
I suspect Bill specifically had this conversation with me because he knows that I work from home in the world of online business. While I do not proclaim to have my own business, I have done freelance technical writing from the comfort of my own home for a couple of years and have become relatively aware of the opportunities out there for people looking to use the internet to work from home.
The problem - as I told Bill - is that starting an internet business is just like starting a business in the real world. You have to have knowledge and understanding about the industry you are about to enter into, and you have to have the ability to not make money for as long as a year.
I can just hear the protests being shouted at the computer screen. Not make money for a year?! Surely that cannot be true! The internet is like a golden goose that if you can just capture it, will start producing money instantly.
Unfortunately, that is simply the truth. Like any business, it needs time to grow, work out the kinks, become established, and then start bringing in profit. And the first step in that process is gaining as much information possible about the new line of work you want to be in.
While there is a whole group of people who have made their careers out of instructing others how to make a profit system online - Justin Blake, Scott Davenport, Anthony Morrison, to name a few - the reality is much of the information they are selling is available if you just know what to look for.
And none of these profit system online gurus will tell you what I just did - that you need to be able to wait a year before you really start making any money. Really, they cannot. It is not the fault of Justin Blake that Bill wants to start a business that makes money right now, and it is not the fault of Anthony Morrison if people are more willing to buy an instruction manual that promises them that they will.
And I suppose it is not Bills fault that he did not realize that either. The world of online business seems to be a mystical thing to people who are not familiar with it. But really, Bill, if anyone could start an online business with no experience and relatively little knowledge and make money immediately, then why would anyone be working in any other industry?
