We all have those moments at the office when we finish one project and realise that we do not have the right information to begin the next one. This can be a difficult time for those aiming to change habits as boredom can easily cause habit breaking. Rather than letting boredom creep in, seek something productive to complete, even when it means cleaning out your desk drawers. This might not be an exciting task in itself but it has the double advantage of keeping boredom at bay and keeping your mind off your bad habit. Not to mention actually being able to discover a pen whenever you need one!
If you hate to wait and get bored very quickly, be prepared. Rather than getting annoyed that you've got to wait, think of something rewarding you may not usually have the time for; reading a chapter of your book, listening to new music or getting to finish that tricky sukodo puzzle. Any time you unexpectantly need to wait for someone or something then use your powers of observation and play a game e.g. "spot the child with red hair". It might sound silly but this will make certain that your mind is actively focusing on something besides the fact you are trying to change habits.
In order to make your habit change work you may try some, or all, these habit breaking secrets:
1. Perhaps you've got a task in the office which you find boring try to look at the task in a different way. If you had to keep doing this task until you found something beneficial about it then what could you find? It may be something as simple as increased co ordination but seeking that benefit will help to prevent boredom which will assist you to change habits.
2. Should you catch public transport to and from work then take a good book or a magazine with you so you stop boredom from occurring. If you're driving then listen to the radio. Good music is sure to beat the boredom of any rush hour traffic!
3. Aim to keep yourself busy at home. Have friends over for dinner. Keep a long list of all the items which you meant to undertake at home when you had the time, that way when boredom strikes you've some alternatives to keep you busy.
4. If you've got a boring task to perform then break that task up by moving. A walk to the water cooler each half hour could be enough to keep you going until you are able to move onto a more interesting task.
5. Are there certain times of your day you get bored? It might be that you are not bored at all but experiencing a natural slump in energy. The best ways to reenergise yourself is to exercise, drink water or have a healthy snack.
6. Get organised and plan your day so that you fill the spare moments, when you usually get bored, with something interesting or something that you've been meaning to do for ages.
7. Find a way to have some fun even for those tasks that you don't like. I really don't like ironing so I will always make sure there is a good show on TV during which I will do a whole weeks ironing and maybe have a few laughs too.
